Explaining technical debt to management

Today, we no longer develop software on a greenfield site, but rather expand and modify existing systems. In the process, the code becomes increasingly complex and accumulates technical debt. We all realise this in the development team, but how do we explain to management that it makes sense to reduce technical debt at an early stage?
