Abstract:

Secure software development is critical in today's digital world. This talk presents ten practical pieces of advice that cover the entire development process. The content ranges from conducting a thorough asset analysis to creating an interaction design that contributes to security.

Effective methods for minimising the attack surface are presented and the importance of the 'Principle of Least Privileges' is explained. The presentation highlights critical pitfalls in software development and shows how domain-driven design can contribute to greater security. Abstract:

Koelnmesse is the operator of one of the world's largest inner-city exhibition centres. Essential components for the successful operation of the exhibition centre are the parking and logistics functions within the Cologne Deutz district.

A digital and, as far as possible, automated car park control system is being developed that uses sensors to record car park occupancy and enables largely automated control. The system is integrated into Koelnmesse's IT landscape and communicates with the ticket shop, the eSlot time slot management system, the automatic pay stations and the car park control system, for example.

The introduction of the car park management system will help to smooth out the overall inflow of traffic and reduce the overall destination search traffic in the city centre. This will reduce _NOx pollution not only at peak times during intensive trade fair periods, but also during non-fair periods when the trade fair car park can be used for other purposes to relieve traffic in Cologne.

Abstract:

The ATLAS-L4 research project is testing how driverless trucks can be used to improve the safe and efficient transport of goods on motorways. Autobahn GmbH has to answer new questions: How can it approve operating areas for autonomous driving while controlling it sufficiently to continue to fulfil its responsibility for safety and traffic flow on the motorways?

Together with the WPS, a software system was developed that issues permits and can use dynamic rules based on current traffic events to selectively restrict the operating area of autonomous lorries.

In a short presentation, including a demonstration, we will show how we managed to bring this completely new expertise to life in just a few months on the basis of a fixed budget using an agile mindset and an uncompromising focus on quality.

Abstract:

The lighthouse project One Baustellentracker (O.BT) was an innovative project of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. The O.BT addresses a central concern of the administration: to obtain up-to-date and reliable information on the actual start and end of construction sites in the city area.

The project combines the agility and willingness to experiment of a start-up culture with the reliability of public infrastructure.

Supported by Stadtwerke Lübeck and WPS, Projketteam realised a functional prototype in short development cycles. The insights gained led to the decision not to pursue the project any further. The presentation shows the realisation process and which alternative was chosen instead.

Abstract:

Traffic management in major cities such as Hamburg faces challenges due to unpredictable events such as accidents and extreme weather, which require a rapid response from traffic control centres.

In the #transmove project, the Traffic Analysing and Reporting Suite (TARS) was developed to provide control centre staff with an effective tool for proactive traffic control through short-term forecasts and real-time traffic data, thus enabling safer and smoother traffic in Hamburg.

Abstract:

AI is often seen as a panacea for solving complex data problems. But does it always have to be the latest and most sophisticated AI technology or are more traditional approaches sometimes more effective?

In the project with RheinPorts and the Swiss Rhine Ports (SRH), various approaches were tested to categorise manual text entries for freight loading in order to generate correct statistics and invoices.
The challenge here was to reconcile the best possible accuracy with other non-functional requirements, such as time behaviour. For example, a state-of-the-art AI approach was discarded because the processing time was too long and other (more efficient?) methods were tested and used instead.

This presentation describes the agile approach in the project: from the initial idea, through the comparison of different approaches, to the final solution.

Abstract:

In this talk, we will shed light on the practical challenges of developing an AI-based chatbot that answers comprehension questions about the training material for participants in a software architecture training course.

We report on our experiences - from the first prototype to productive use - and share important insights, for example on the difficulties of evaluating response quality and dealing with security and data protection requirements.
