Airport Ground Handling

Hamburg Airport handles more than 150,000 aircraft movements every year, taking more than 17 million people to their destinations around the world. The subsidiary Groundstars is in charge of handling the aircraft. Typical tasks include loading the aircraft with suitcases, de-icing the aircraft in winter, and transporting passengers to the outfield positions with the help of buses. To overcome these enormous logistical challenges, digitalisation and analytics are core topics for Groundstars.

For both WPS and the airport's subsidiary, digitalisation and analytics are two sides of the same coin. Specifically, WPS develops apps to support operational processes. At the same time, the connected reporting system (business intelligence system) creates the basis for making the data evaluable and thereby supporting the management's decision-making process.

Due to the agile approach, WPS was able to provide the first reports to the management after only a few months. In the course of the project, further data sources were connected and a large number of reports and dashboards were developed. Thus, the circle of users of the Business Intelligence System in its current expansion stage is not limited to the needs of the management, but is seen in many areas as a helpful tool for the completion of administrative tasks. For example, it is used in order planning to detect problems in order processing at an early stage and to correct them proactively. Processes in further development are optimised in a timely manner on the basis of feedback key figures.

Use case 2

Clean Air Project

During the last decades, individual traffic on the roads has increased more and more. Anyone who has ever driven a car in a large German city knows the problem of traffic jams and lost time.

An important adjusting screw to flexibly counteract these problems is the switching programmes of the traffic lights (traffic signals) and the coordination of the programmes between intersections (green wave). Although the planners already had the opportunity to carry out sophisticated micro-simulations, they received practically no feedback on how the changes to the switching programme affected traffic in reality.

With the Clean Air Projects, a platform was created to visualise such data and facts in combination and make them evaluable. For example, the traffic for each road section in Hamburg can be viewed and compared with a freely selectable reference period.

One challenge in this project was to process the enormous amount of traffic data in a performant way. In total, the data stock is in the two-digit terabyte range. The data must not only be provided by the database with a low latency, but also be blended with the route selected by the user in the subsequent process. These are typical challenges found in Big Data projects.

In addition, the software offers the possibility of traffic forecasting based on planned construction measures. Thus, traffic planners already know the resulting impact on traffic during the planning of a measure. In addition, with the help of statistical models, users can recognise when there was an unusually high volume of traffic on which green waves.
