ROADS City - Construction Site Coordination

There are approximately 25,000 road works in Hamburg's road network every year. In order to keep obstructions to the traffic flow as low as possible, careful coordination of these roadworks is required. Together with the State Office for Roads, Bridges and Waterways (LSBG), we are developing ROADS City (Roadwork Administration and Decision System) - a software system consisting of several workstation types. This allows a wide range of tasks and processes to be linked together to simplify roadwork coordination.

ROADS was awarded the German Road and Traffic Engineering Prize in the Innovation category by the BSVI (Federal Association of Road and Traffic Engineers).

Why did we develop ROADS City?

Planning a large number of construction measures in the medium to long term and taking into account the impact on road traffic is a considerable challenge. When a very large number of construction projects are to be coordinated, it is difficult to identify temporal and spatial overlaps as well as potential impairments among each other. Often the overview is almost completely lost. A mere map view of the construction sites is not sufficient because it is not clear which of the construction measures are to take place at the same time. If only the time periods are considered, those responsible do not see whether construction measures taking place at the same time are spatially adjacent at all.

The software ROADS City provides a simple and extremely effective answer to these problems: By means of an immediately comprehensible colour coding of the construction measures on a map, those responsible can see at a glance the connection between spatial and temporal location and can quickly assess possible interactions between different construction measures. This is a quantum leap in construction planning. In addition to this revolutionary approach, the ROADS City software offers numerous additional functions that make ROADS City the tool of choice for modern construction planning.

Functionalities

  • Coordination of planning between authorities, management bodies and other stakeholders
  • Presentation of a long planning horizon ( > 20 years) with a corresponding increase in fuzziness for long-term planning with a minimum of information
  • Georeferenced overview of all planned construction measures
  • Joint presentation of location and time period
  • Simulation games with what-if scenarios (simulation of planning changes)
  • Audit-proof historisation of measures
  • Consideration of diversions and heavy load routes
  • Consideration of events such as holidays or major events
  • Definition of rules to maintain traffic flow, e.g. ensure continuous accessibility of important destinations such as airports and hospitals
  • Modelling of dependencies between measures
  • Flexibly configurable overall process: coordination, approval, release and monitoring of execution
  • Linking of measures with external systems, e.g. documents or project planning procedures
  • Planning and approval of cooperative measures of different providers

Well thought-out workplace concept

Single workstation - Desk

  • Use of desktop and laptop computers
  • Detailed planning of measures
  • Review and approval of measures
  • Information of all parties involved
  • Administration of the application

Planning table as a group workstation - Table

  • Plan together in a group at a multi-touch table
  • Alternatives can be reviewed interactively and conflicts solved together

Situation screen as a management board (for meetings) - Board

  • Decision-makers evaluate the planning on a large-screen monitor / projector, take decisions and set priorities

Mobile workplace (planned)

  • Access to relevant data on site
  • Mobile capture
  • Runs on all major operating systems, optimised for phones and tablets

Web workstation (planned)

  • Integration of external parties in planning, e.g. engineering offices, subordinate authorities

Information workstation - web

  • Web-based citizen information platform

System

  • Minimal-invasive integration of existing procedures (adapter interface)
  • Integration of existing systems compatible with common GIS formats
  • Export to all common GIS formats
  • Connection of any other formats via special adapters
  • Role-based rights concept (connection to LDAP, ActiveDirectory)
  • Configuration of any WMS layer
