Modern workplaces are characterized by diverse tasks that require different qualifications. Users want to start tasks at a workplace and continue at other workplaces or on the way. Classic desktop applications come to their limits. Users can not use the desktop system on a mobile basis, nor can group meetings be held. For the requirements, we develop adapted soft- and hardwaresystems, which are precisely tailored to the respective working situations. Workplace-specific functionality and usability are combined. Our focus is on innovative workplace types with matching frontends, such as touch-tables or tablets, which can be easily used through intuitive gestures.

Multitouch-Table

Today, the cooperation of experts is extremely important in every company. In companies, extensive decisions are made by experts in the team. For this cooperative work, touch tables offer the ideal solution: due to multi-touch and so-called tangibles, complex application can be used in parallel and with minimal effort. The large screen area is ideal for card-based applications with georeferenced information. Layer technology, i.e. the representation of several facts in transparent layers, brings together information for decision-making situations. This allows difficult questions to be answered with simple gestures.

Situation Picture

Decision makers often discuss alternative solutions and open problems in project meetings or coordination meetings. In such discussions, it is important that all parties involved can grasp the complex situation with the various content levels, the temporally interrelated events and boundary conditions “at a glance”. At such meetings, decisions with a major impact on operations are made in a short time. In our work, a videowall has proven itself as a frontend for a clear situation picture combined with a specialized moderator workplace. In a large high-resolution video presentation everyone can see the current situation. A moderator, with his workplace system, presents the prepared solution alternatives and keeps the desired actions and their prioritizations visible to everybody.

Mobile Systems

Today, important tasks are not only performed at fixed workstations but are also discussed and coordinated with (external) stakeholders locally. In most cases, up-to-date information and facts must be available for such meetings. Here, mobile devices offer a suitable addition to the workplace in the office. They transport selected documents to different locations, give an overview of the current situation and allow feedback to the control center if the corresponding network access is available.

Nowadays, mobile applications are mostly based on tablets or smartphones. In this case, information must be displayed on relatively small screens and operated via multitouch gestures. Since employees often switch between workplace systems and mobile applications, the different frontends should be based on a common interaction model.
