Improve Cycling in Hamburg

The Cycle Your Cityproject was created in April 2016 at the University of Hamburg in the Department of Computer Science. In cooperation with the traffic working group of the ADFC Hamburg and the Hamburg bicycle traffic coordinator Ms Pfaue, students from various computer science courses set themselves the goal of improving bicycle traffic in Hamburg.

This goal was to be achieved by collecting and visualising movement data of cyclists in order to create a basis for the planning of cycle paths and cycle routes.

The Implementation

Collecting and Visualising the Data

We decided to record movement data via smartphone. We have developed two Cycle Your City apps, one for Android and one for iOS. These allow the user to record and manage their trips. In addition, the Android app offers the option to expand the application with various gadgets, which can be used to automate functions such as starting and stopping the trip recording. This makes the use of the app more comfortable for the user and improves the quality of the collected data.

Since we want to make the representation of bicycle traffic in Hamburg as representative as possible, we do not want to rely solely on the data from our own apps. Therefore, we contacted other app providers to collect as much data as possible and to cover different personas of cyclists.

For visualisation, we use a multi-touch table running software designed specifically for Cycle Your City. This technology allows us to look at the data in a larger group and work with it interactively.

Web App Development

Furthermore, the WPS developed its own web app where users can log in and view their tours and compare them with those of other users.

This offers users the advantage of selecting optimal routes for themselves.
