iPlanB

This project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

The TOMTOM Traffic Index measures congestion in cities worldwide. Hamburg is ranked 61st in the world, 14th in Europe and, with 33% additional travel time, is only one percentage point below the most congested city in Germany, Cologne [as of 06 March 2017].

Congestion can be caused by different factors or the interaction of them. The main factors are: Number of road users, road works, switching of traffic lights and special events such as demonstrations or sporting events.

In the iPlanB project, we focus primarily on the coordination and optimisation of road works, traffic signal switching and special events.

The Project Goal

Improving the Flow of Traffic on Hamburg's Roads

iPlanB stands for "Interactive Big Data Analyses for Planning Construction Measures". The aim of the project is to improve the flow of traffic on Hamburg's roads. To achieve this goal, which is so important for the city and its population, iPlanB first collects extensive historical and live data that influence traffic. The data is then analysed using Big Data approaches and correlations between the factors influencing congestion are worked out.

The analysis of historical data is intended to identify weaknesses in planning. This knowledge helps planners to learn from past mistakes for the future. iPlanB will also use machine learning to develop forecasts and hints for planners in order to identify possible planning errors at an early stage. This can reduce congestion and improve the flow of traffic in Hamburg.

Project Organisation

iPlanB is funded by the Investitions- und Förderbank Hamburg (IFB). The project started in September 2016 and is scheduled to run for three years. WPS is the consortium leader and works closely with the University of Hamburg on the project .

To increase the benefits of the project results, iPlanB isworking closely with various departments of the State Office for Roads, Bridges and Waterways (LSBG).
